Carara National Park
Region: Central Pacific
Location: from San Jose, take Avenida 10 to Parque La Sabana to Highway 27. Go west for 34 miles to Orotina. After town, turn left onto coastal highway, 11 miles to Quebrada Bonita Ranger Station.
Size: 12,950 acres
National Park since: June 1, 1978
Highlights: Primary & secondary rainforest, waterfalls, lakes, rivers, hiking trails, pre-columbian archeaological sites throughout area.
Facilities: Quebrada Bonita Ranger Station is open 8am to 4pm and has potable water and restrooms.

There is a 1/2 mile loop trail at the Quebrada Bonita Ranger Station and the Araceas Nature Trail parallels the Rio Grande de Tarcoles and branches off to the Laguna Meandrica and marshes. You'll see lots of wild birds including one of the largest populations of Scarlet Macaws in Costa Rica.
